Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled has become far more than an additional activity for our pupils—it is a valued therapy session, a source of joy and inspiration to take on new challenges. The sessions have such a positive impact on our pupils physical and mental wellbeing. The sessions also help to develop pupils’ communication skills, enabling them to gain confidence in their own ability whilst connecting with the horse physically and emotionally. For many of our children, opportunities to participate in community activities can be limited, but the Riding for the Disabled sessions open a door that feels truly inclusive and empowering.

The horses and RDA volunteers offer a calm, patient presence that helps our pupils build trust and gain confidence in their own abilities.

The physical benefits are also remarkable. Sitting tall in the saddle strengthens core muscles, improves balance, and supports coordination in ways other therapies cannot always achieve. For children with physical challenges, the movement of the horse provides a rhythmic, soothing experience that helps their bodies relax and respond. The sense of achievement our pupils take away with them last beyond the bus journey back to school, it improves self-esteem and provides memories to last a lifetime.

For our school community, this charity represents opportunities, connection, and possibility. It gives our pupils moments they will remember for years: moments of bravery, laughter, friendship, and success. We are truly grateful for every volunteer, every horse, and every session that helps our pupils experience the world in a bigger, brighter way.

Riding for the Disabled doesn’t just support our pupils—it helps them flourish. And for us, that is priceless and we are truly very grateful for all the wonderful sessions and opportunities the Furness RDA provides for Sandside School.
